La corriente oceánica que calienta Europa se debilita

Un estudio publicado en la revista Nature sugiere que la corriente del Océano Atlántico que fluye desde los trópicos a las aguas frías del norte se está debilitando.
Esto podría podría alterar drásticamente el clima en Europa, ya que esta corriente juega un papel fundamental para calentar las zonas del norte de Europa.
Según el estudio, la corriente se ha ralentizado aproximadamente un 30% desde 1957 a 2004. Si esta corriente se paralizara, los modelos sugieren que la temperatura en el noroeste de Europa podría descender entre 4 y 6ºC en 20 años.
La corriente funciona debido a las diferencias de salinidad y densidad entre el agua los trópicos y la de los polos, y se cree que el calentamiento global podría ser el causante, al derretir los glaciares, aportando grandes cantidades de agua dulce al Océano.
